Weekend edition

The ineffable Megan Barrone and a few of the amazing things she has on offer this week

Yo! How about three wines, to drink now; to drink in the waning weeks of summer; to enjoy for their foreshadowing, their portent of things to come! Cryptic? Perhaps . . . but sometimes one tastes a few things with Megan, and they hit in just the right spot. Early August, light high clouds, a certain slant to the light a PORTENT to the end of summer, and of cooler weather, and is there a foreshadow of a smoke season, which we have, so far, been spared?

In walks a bottle of wine, light in alcohol, yet dark in extract….BLAUFRANKICH? Yes! Vineyard Project, Burgenland Austria. From partners in wine, Gober & Feinbichler, former proteges of Franz Weninger, comes this bloody mouthful of black dirt, quartz crystals, and smoked blackberry. Yes, it is rad and you will know, should you decide to give it a go….It’s $26

Then we have this amazing craziness from Jochen Beurer . . . Rot Gut or Good Red in translation….a blend of Portugeiser, Dornfelder, and Spatburgunder! Ser Gut Ya! This is a project from former pro European BMX champion turned biodynamic natural wine guru….in Swabia, Wurtemberg. The wine is truly electric, channeling the energy of the sun and balance of the vineyards. Vom Boden, Beurer’s importer here in the US, speaks of Jochen as one of the most important grower/winemakers in Germany right now, because of his fervent concern and consideration, not just for his vines but for the environment in which they grow, and by extension, to the world around them. $29

O yes! and there’s this bottle of lovely amber, light pinkischness from our friends, Ross & Bee at Maloof: Where ya’ PJs At!? Could there be a more appropo’ name for this cuvée? I don’t think so! The name says it all: Skin contact Pinot Gris & Riesling, (riesling, just to help us keep with a Germanic theme here) I say: YES PLEASE! smack me upside my mthrfckn head with a pillow-full of goosedown, because that is how I feel when I drink this nectar, the color of peach juice, and even more, the color of the sun through my rose colored glasses . . .and if you’ve not experienced a skin contact Pinot Gris, I assure you it can be breathtaking, and with some Riesling thrown in there for some aromatic lift, JUST STOP IT! Why hadn’t someone thought of this before? $29
